There's probably no other profession or trade in the world quite like the law. Imagine asking your builder to give you a quote for a new conservatory. Instead of giving you a fixed price, he gives you an hourly rate for himself and different hourly rates for his labourers, plasterer etc. Then he tells you he can't possibly guarantee how long it will take to build your conservatory - he'll just send you the bill when he's finished.

Needless to say, that builder would probably go out of business within a matter of months. So why are lawyers different? Why do lawyers hide behind hourly rates, claiming they cannot possibly know how long it will take to deal with something for you?

Let's be fair - there are times when being a lawyer is far more uncertain than building a conservatory. In disputes, for example, no one knows what 'the other side' is going to do - will they fight it all the way or give in at the first sign of trouble? There are other times, though, where lawyers should be able to tell you how long it will take them to do something and how much it will cost. Also, lawyers are now allowed to charge success fees in some circumstances.
